APE50 three wheel coffee bar Balham London 31/10/11.

My idea for this isn't just coffee, but a half a dozen collapsible stools with similar table or three, books loads of them all I can cram in the little trailer and music....good music or not...just don't plug your ecans into my little portable sound system....i'm not bothered to make much dough just recoop my expenses really --- as I want to bumble around London doing my little bit of writing and photography out in the back of beyond London!

Bill Moenkhaus

Bill Moenkhaus, originally uploaded by Namey McNamerson.

Once upon a time, during an extra horse, Silo McRunt, age thirteen, tried to count up to his mother. His actions were noticed by his wet neighbor ( a mere bacon fanner by trade ) who had just defeated his breakfast. He rushed to the phone and called Vacant 780-W, which is the number of the Hard Lard Connecting Works. Frantically, he described the situation to Mrs. Razzbushel, author of "The Veto of Hard Lardness," or the "Hard Varnish of Leto." Mrs. Razzbushel had been suffering with bundles for three days, but she poured herself into the hearse and drove at neckbreaking speed to the scene of little McRunt, age thirteen, counting up to his mother.

She sped through the night like a damp sausage. She had a ham in her hand and the blisters on her feet sang like turkey in the twilight. Meanwhile, and unknown to her, an old man sat down in his grave.

( Part I of Silo McRunt by the great Bill Moenkhaus, fellow Bent Eagle and friend of Hoagy Carmichael )

Does '50s music still matter?

Very interesting...as a child of the 50's I feel this is right...for now at least.

Ronnie Hawkins-Who Do You Love

Just a great song done by of the original wild man of Rock'n'Roll.
Some blokes went on from Ronnie's band to form a small group that had some success --- as The Band!

The Real Ritchie Valens - La Bamba

A summertime party at our place isn't complete without a few tunes for the tragically short Ritchie Valens career. If you have any faves send along as I am making a "Summer Songs for the big BBQ" playlist here, cheers now.

FUTURE by Todd Rundgren

I love the clip/movie that goes with Todd Rundgren's very Eno sounding tune. Both are great takes of looking back at our alleged future.

JACK NITZSCHE -"The Lonely Surfer" (1963)

I have no idea why a small-town Ontario kid like me had such a fascination with "surfer" music ...not really the Beach Boys. This movie was one I saw at the little local movie theatre (The Capitol) and I got hooked.

JAMAICA FAREWELL ORIGINAL-- HARRY BELAFONTE

My Darlin' Nicci loves this song...me thinks she harbours a little crush on Mr. Belafonte -- to think she threw him over for me...sigh...

Toots & The Maytals - Pressure drop

Blood Sweat & Tears - I Can't Quit Her

The time genre of Rock was popular was very short lived. For a long time it was looked on with as much disdain as Prog Rock had until recently. I saw this band with both Al Kooper and then later with David Clayton Thomas. A Canadian who was with them when they had their biggest hits and someone I met a few times in the old Toronto bar band scene. I love Al Kooper's lyrics here.

Wrecking Ball - Amelia Curran

A terrific song by Amelia Curran, a great singer/songwriter from the Rock aka Newfoundland. It's my Canadiana Song of the Day!

Sam & Dave - When something is wrong with my baby

Sam Moore just one the greatest voices in Soul. Sending this out as my iPoddy Playlist tune of the day.

The Sadies - Cut Corners (Official Video)

Back to more current times....The Sadies are on the short list for the Polaris Award.
Great band and much too underrated.

KENNY GAMBLE - STANDING IN SHADOWS

Back to my first love R'n'B/Soul ....one I have in my collection! Danced to it too....lol...

David Wiffen White Lines (1973 Coast to coast Fever)

Hope you all forgive me this indulgence just one more great tunes by David Wiffen. It harkens back to time, for me, when I was making coast to coast runs with the thumb and then my Norton C!

David Wiffen White Lines (1973 Coast to coast Fever)

This the David Wiffen that I knew in early 70's and thought there would be a great musical future for him. He's just such a great voice and a great interpreter of songs.
Alas, such was not the case, he had a few more releases, retired from the biz for a long time tried again in the late 80's and then gave it up for good. Richard Flohil and I were reminiscing about him just a few months ago in our great Paris meet up. We both sighed over it.

David Wiffen performs More Often Than Not - CJOH

David Wiffen just one of the great Folk voices in Canada who doesn't tour
or do appearences any more! But, again, I was lucky enough to see him live several times in Ottawa.
Kind of Jerry Jeff Walker voice but with more colour.

LAURA NYRO spanish harlem (LIVE!)

The sound quality here isn't the best but oh how I do love Laura Nyro's version
and feel lucky to have seen her do it live -- Sharin' Sunday with y'all !

Mamas And Papas - Spanish Harlem (Original Stereo)

I was in love with Moma Cass's voice and she was such a wild chile too....my kinda gal!

Beth Rowley - Almost Persuaded

Knocks me out, she's young but a very soulful and gifted artist!

One Fine Morning-Lighthouse (STEREO)

Some used to call them Canada's version of Chicago --- but they were so much better, in vocals and horn charts in particular. Their drummer Skip I knew from the old days when he was in The Paupers.
I heard/saw them do this live and the tune just hits you and takes you for a such a great musical ride. The popularity of so-called Rock Fusion or Jazz Rock was very short lived but...this is a gem of a tune and lives on.

Jackie Wilson - This Bitter Earth

Another great interpretation of the classic tune....as we know I'm such a huge fan of Mr. Wilson's work and for our amigo Tereza Bell-Tzannatou

Irma Thomas - This Bitter Earth

Yes, I know Aretha did this tune first but...last night we went to see Irma and she was soul stirringly awesome! At 70 she was in fine voice and great humor then when leaving the stage after going strong and taking requests from us her audience and fans, she winced dramatically as she made her stage exit. You'd have never known from her performance --- she truly shone as bright as any diamond star and her title Queen of New Orleans Show as never more apt and fitting. Thank you Irma for bring your soul and your heart to us on a very blue Sunday in London town.

Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up

Just one of the greatest song poets, Curtis Mayfield! And this song just had to be number one on my
Friday's Gonna Make You Smile playlist!

Love Abides. Iris Dement & Tom Russell.wmv

A pretty song -- sadly the word pretty has fallen into the "very trite" category these days...but that's just what this is in the true sense of the word. So yes listen love and catch your falling star. I did!!!

Wow...this looks interesting viewing! It took me awhile to realize that was Luke Skywalker....might be the making of a late career comeback for him~!

The Big Country - composer Jerome Moross

Just one of THE greatest cinematic openings and soundtrack openings of all times! I put it up there against the Star Wars tunes....and I'm a fan of those too! I remember seeing this on a huge screen in the lovely little Art Deco theatre The Capitol. It was moving for a young fella of 10 and sometimes makes me, now, feel like an ol'Geezer but I love this style...the grand opening the larger than life way that American cinema was in 50's! So it today a movie opening that gets me all goosebumped....lol

Bruce Springsteen - Backstreets

My life was in tatters , the carrion carcass of my life left after lawyers and mind readers dealt a blow to my life, the joys of being a father ripped away by my own blindness but I kissed my 1 year old son good night, tucked him in and said I would love him forever no matter where I was and no matter where he was --- back streets or super highways...I'm always your Dad and you're always my son. It took another life time for us to find each other again as grown men and know how important love is to us.

I went to this concert in Toronto just after leaving our home for the last time.

Bruce Springsteen - Bobby Jean

RIP Clarence Clemmons!
There is an element of just being there making this song special to me. I saw this tour live, I heard , saw and felt it all.....and just the Big Man's being there with the Boss was enough....there wasn't much he need to do but put the finish on the a great song! And that's the story of a great musician!

Bruce Springsteen - Cindy (with Clarence Clemons)

May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

The rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

RIP Big Man

John Lennon - stand by me ( official video )

Yes it's a cover of an almost perfect song but not only does John pay homage but because it's "flawed" and his voice is a bit ragged in some spots -- well that's why I love it....

To all you have stood by me, and made me proud and whole again in my life....I love you all the
head of that long list is the precious love of my darlin' Nicci!

Animals - Club A Go-Go [Very Good(+) quality]

Many Happy Returns, Mr Eric Burdon!

Eric Burdon is one of those gritty Rock'n'Roll survivors....and he knew a good band when he saw or should I saw heard them. From the early days with with Chas Chandler and one of my favorite musicians, Allan Price then with a Mick Gallagher doing a stint on the boards to the one of the final incarnations that was tuned into the hip San Fran psychedelic era as Eric Burdon & The Animals! Conway Twitty - Rainy Night In Georgia ft. Sam Moore

Two greats doing a fine job on this classic tune. Always showing that country and soul are closely related.

Yes, that feeling can be both things at once...that is not a bad thing that it's raining all over the world, that hush of small rain on late summer's eve, washing, restoring and dampening down the dusty parts of life...and again rainy night can be such a sad thing...

Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me

Was just a ruminatin' and reminiscin' on the wonderful tales of Van told to us by dear Richard Flohil and listening to Van sing. The story of Chris Barber playing with him was very ironic indeed considering we got back to London to find a BBC radio special on Mr. Chris Barber.

Mills Brothers - Glow Worm (live, 1957)

Now, the Mills Bros were definitely not cool when I was a kid....heck my Dad liked them. But I was housebound and bedridden (as bedridden as an active 11 year old could be) and I played 78's my Dad had of them and the Ink Spots.....I was hooked....and this number really moves!
